What Liposuction Is Really All About

{ Posted on Aug 20 2010 by Anne Keller }

Liposuction is a favorite process of removing body fat nowadays. The procedure, also known as lipoplasty or simply lipo, needs the patient to be at least in his or her model weight before undergoing the surgery. Because this operation allows a relatively easy way for those who have trouble losing weight, it is oftentimes abused. People often have misconceptions about it. If you are preparation to undergo the operation, it is important that you familiarize yourself with liposuction.

Others have incorrectly marked liposuction as a weight loss operation. Actually, lipo is a cosmetic surgical procedure that redefines the curves of the body regions that have stubborn fat deposits by suctioning the fat out from those parts.

If you are aiming to lose 20 or 30 pounds, this procedure is not for you. This does not eliminate your unwanted pounds. The fats that will be removed may just be around 10 pounds at most. A higher amount is also possible, but that would also mean bigger health danger. Thus, liposuction is preferably done to patients who already are within their ideal weight but just have “problem” parts.

Although liposuction can be done to older patients, there’s a substantial difference if a younger patient undergoes the operation. This is because without elasticity, the skin may sag once the fats have been sucked out. Ideally, the patient should be healthy, a non-smoker, and has tight and good skin elasticity.

Before everything else, be sensible with your expectation. Lipo doesn’t improve cellulite, but it only removes the fat deposits underneath it.

Convalescence period can be a real trouble also. Swells and bruises commonly appear immediately after the surgery. The bruising can last for a few weeks, while the swelling may remain for months. It is recommended that you avoid any exhausting work or vigorous activity, including sports, while you recover for around six months.

Always remember to go to your surgeon for post-operation checkups. The outcome won’t be visible at once. It normally takes around 3 months before the full effect can be seen.

Always observe healthy eating habits before and after the liposuction operation to achieve the full outcome. Remember that lipo is not a weight loss surgery, but just a contouring operation.
