The Secrets Of Long Term Motivation For Weight Loss

The number one area where most people fail when trying to lose weight is in the long-term motivation department. Most people can start a program, but very few actually finish.

So here are some secrets for staying motivated for the long haul:

1. Have laser specific goals: General goals will lead to general, untargeted behavior. Instead, have laser precise goals so that you can reach them a lot quicker. The last thing you want are ambiguous reasons as to why you are getting in shape.

2. Keep track of how your body is changing: If you simply wing it, you will not see very good results here. You need to track things in order to see how you are changing. And keeping track will also provide the benefit of giving you an objective view on your progress.

3. Have the biggest goals possible: The more extreme your goals, the more adrenalin you will have. And this is a great way to stay motivated when things become difficult. So make sure you aim for the stars. Worst case scenario, even if you don’t reach your goal, you will have made a lot of progress.

4. Use a carrot, not a whip: Using coercion and self-flagellation to get you moving may work in the short run, but eventually it will destroy your ability to keep going forward. In fact, political structures that are based on this model always end up failing-your mind is not made to work under these conditions.

5. Put deadlines on as much as you can: Without deadlines, you rate of failure will increase. You have been conditioned to respond to deadlines, so take advantage of this inborn system. Moreover, deadlines will help you focus on the most critical elements for success.

6. Expect setbacks: If you expect to have a perfect weight loss experience, you will be sorely disappointed. Even the greatest athletes fail more often than they succeed. Even nature’s top predators miss their prey more often than they get it. So expect to have micro failures every so often.

Learning how to optimize long term motivation is the best way to ensure weight loss success. You see, it’s always motivation which ends up being the rate limiting factor.
